This blog is dedicated to the young girls in my life who inspire me, and deserve the whole truth of the power of their femininity. I have heard too many horror stories from women who were made to feel broken, confused and isolated after their first bleed. This blog is directed at the girls becoming women, in a time of great change where the divine feminine is remembering herself.
The model and artist for this blog, is a very special girl, my niece, Zara Naidoo. Her creativity shines through her diagram of the cycles, and her free spirit cannot be adequately captured by these pictures. May she be blessed with Devi’s grace as she faces this happy transition with confidence and clarity. This is my wish for every girl who reads this blog. Please share with the girls in your life who need to hear these truths.
You are not broken, you are becoming! This exciting transition time is bringing in a new phase of your life. Don’t worry, it doesn’t come with all the responsibilities your mum has. It comes with an exploration of your feminine energy and how it enhances your life and your role.
What they didn’t teach you at school, is that the feminine energy that rises within you, is the most powerful force in the universe!! Your womb is the seat of creation itself! Not only does it hold the potential for new life in a baby, but this is where creative potential is birthed from. Creation of art, music, ideas and projects that could change the world.
You hold this potential within you.
The woman’s cycle follows the moon, and its’ movement through our skies in 28 days. This is in contrast to man’s cycle which follows the sun that rises and falls in 24hrs.
The cycle we are talking about here has to do with energy. Your energy will change during the month, in both level and character. Your bio-energetic field (the field of energy that surrounds you) and how energy flows through your body, is influenced internally by your hormonal system, as well as externally by the environment. They inform each other to give you your unique energetic field at any moment in time.
We understand how the moon influences bodies of water to give us tides, and that our bodies are 70% water, so you can see how the moon could affect us.
Ancient cultures understood the woman’s cycle as closely related both to Mother Earth and the moon cycle. We can a lot from consulting this wisdom, and I encourage you to explore the teachings of your ancestors and ancient culture, wherever you are and whatever your cultural background. If you go back far enough, you will find the gems of the medicine women in the sacred traditions in your part of the world.
During your period, while you are bleeding, your body’s energy levels dip, and you should honour it with rest. The character of the energy you will experience is one of release and inner reflection. You may experience pain as you release the difficulties you have stored in your body in the month that has passed. It is important to allow for this and support your body and emotions during this release. Do what makes you feel nourished and practice extreme self care. This might look like warm, earthy, meaty meals, and being curled up on the couch under a blanket with chocolates, watching your favourite series. Whatever it looks like to you, honour what makes you feel loved.
A hot water bottle on your lower back will help with cramps, and you may need some pain-killers. An important practice I have adopted, is placing a hand on my womb, and asking it what messages it has for me, giving it loving attention and allowing it to speak to me through the pain.
Massaging with castor oil is also a loving gesture to support her, and helps to release tension and toxins.
Spending time alone or with close loved ones is completely natural during this time. It helps to have that close someone to fill your hot water bottle and prepare your hearty meals for you.
Even though it may seem like a time that is challenging, you are actually very powerful when it comes to your intuition. The downtime can also be a time for connecting to your inner wisdom and exploring deep ideas that come to you in the darkness.
Remember that it is a time for you to listen to your inner guidance, release the emotional pains that you experienced during the past month, and connect with the energy of Mother Earth and her warm and loving nature. I offer my blood back to Mother Earth into the soil in my garden. It is a powerful ritual of connection with the planet that gives you life. And her energy being that of a mother, nurturing and providing you with everything you need.
During the next phase, called the follicular phase, your hormone levels change, and with it, your energy levels and character changes. Your energy level progressively increases and you start to feel a glow up. You may start to feel more inspiration and ideas, and feel more social and eager to see friends and connect with community. You start to feel lighter and brighter!
This is a good time to make plans and give time and energy to projects.
The days around ovulation (around D14), are your superwoman phase!! You will feel and look like a million bucks! And you will have the energy to create amazing things! This is a good time to put your plans into action. Create that art piece, launch that project, have that big event! People will feel your energy as inspiring and contagious!
This is your peak, so use this energy wisely! You will probably be able to pull all-nighters on passionate endeavours and be able to help and support others without draining yourself.
After that impressive streak, what goes up, must come down 😉 You will start to go within again. This will feel like a progressive decrease in energy, but you are still great at getting things done. Honour the descent back into yourself and your inner world. Social gatherings become less and less appealing as you near your bleeding phase again.
You will start to be more sensitive, and that may make you seem more irritable and moody. Honour this and retreat into your own space, having respect for yourself and others. Pay attention to what triggers you, because they may carry messages about where your boundaries may be lacking. Remember that you are an energetic being (your body, emotions and thoughts run on energy). You are sovereign, having both the honour and responsibility of managing your own energy. Boundaries for what you allow and disallow into your energetic field is important.
Throughout the month, try to keep in touch with your emotions, honour and release them. They are messages to you, and women are emotional beings. This is a gift, to be more in touch with our emotions. We are also more sensitive to energies around us. Pay attention to this, because it can become a superpower. And speaking of superpowers, your intuition is naturally on point, a God given benefit in a world built on cold logic. When you feel something in your gut, something that feels off or something that seems contrary to what others are telling you, explore that feeling. You may be getting a message from your intuitive nature.
Find ways to channel your creative energy, whether through art or dance or singing, or anything that makes you happy! Choose connections with people that make you feel good, and don’t kick you when you are down. Because we all have to go through highs and lows. Good friends are those that share in your joy and hold space for you when you are low. And be that friend to someone else. Building that community, honouring our feminine side, helps to build nurturing relationships built on an equal giving and receiving.
As for our male counterparts, remember that you are different but equal to them. Different in your strengths and weaknesses, but equal in the need for respect, dignity and justice. They may not be able to fully understand your changing faces during your moon cycle, but they can certainly offer love, respect and appreciation for your feminine power.
I hope this helps you understand how beautiful and meaningful our journey is as women, and how your womb represents the womb of creation in the universe! You are special. Don’t you ever forget that, my love.
