the one thing god doesn't have

Give your unconditional love to God, not only through prayer and healing yourself to find Him in you, but through service to His children.

I was listening to a talk by Paramahansa Yoganandaji, and something he said not only stayed with me but brought me to tears.

He said that the one thing God doesn’t have, and wants, is our unconditional love. God gave us free will. In order for us to truly have free will, we had to forget. To forget the truth, that we are never apart from Him. That we have Him inside us, that at our core, we are God himself witnessing life through us.

God lives vicariously through us, as consciousness or awareness. Our connection to him is ever present. But we choose whether to give Him our love or not.

It brought me to tears, that the omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent source of everything, relinquished control over His children in order for us to rediscover Him through His Leela (play), experience and evolution of the soul.

I’m sure parents can resonate with this. Allowing your children the freedom they need to learn, and trusting that they will love you through it all.

So you can understand also, how it feels when your children choose to move further and further away from you.

It is also not advisable to shower your children with gifts in order to earn their love. The same should not be expected from our Mother/Father God. We pray for His gifts but not for His love. We want His abundance and blessings but we don’t return His love. We enter an un-reciprocal relationship with Him, yet we moan when our human relationships are imbalanced.

What a cheek! As my mother would say. And what a slap in the face. Can we hurt God? I don’t think so. But when you develop a relationship with God as your father or mother or friend, you feel the pangs of this injustice. And that’s the way we can understand God as humans, through relationship. Everything is experienced through relationship.

So, we should reciprocate the unwavering, unrelenting, ever-forgiving love from our divine parents with the same unconditional love. Don’t reserve your love only for when you want something. Or only when you are down. Or only when you are up. Love God always, no matter your circumstance, because there is always justice through God’s love. If only you had eyes to see and ears to hear.

Don’t bite the hand that feeds you. That provides all earthly pleasures, and all divine gifts, and everything in creation. Paradoxically, it is those who lack those gifts that love God the most. You will learn this when you visit poor communities, war zones and the sick. The spaces I have been privy to, in my travels with Doctors Without Borders, and my work as a paediatric surgeon. Those with the least, have the most faith in the Most High.

I have many accounts of the love I felt from people who were supposed to be so different from me, and even sometimes my enemies, when I worked in Muslim countries as a Hindu. They didn’t care for our differences. They felt the love of my service and my sacrifice. And their gratitude healed parts of me I didn’t know were broken. It bridged the gaps of prejudice that the world has programmed into us. The imaginary borders between us.

So you ask, why is there suffering? Why is there poverty and disease? Because that is when you reach for God the most. It also brings out the God in you, when you have compassion and love for strangers who are suffering and choose to serve them. There may be forces that seek to separate us, but it is us who have to make the choice to accept that as our truth or to seek the truth that is already within us, of unity consciousness, seeing each other and ourselves as children of God.

If we did this as a collective, there would be no war, poverty or disease. There would be no need. The need for polarity would be null and void. That is the world we all seek, whether we realise it or not. We all want peace, love and unity. We can collectively move into a higher dimension of being, where polarity is no longer needed. We just have to have the courage to fight for it. To reject the story of separation. It is indeed that simple.

Give your unconditional love to God, not only through prayer and healing yourself to find Him in you, but through service to His children. In that state, you will always hear the Voice of God, and you will always feel the presence of God, because you have finally accepted that you are His child. You have come home.

Om. Peace. Amen.
